If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you can take to reach us:
- First, cross the bridge to the mainland, then continue on New Haven Ave for 6.6 miles. Turn right onto Wickham Rd. After the intersection with Sheridan Rd, watch for us coming up on your right. We’re at 1061 S Wickham Rd.
- If New Haven Ave has too much traffic, you could go up the coast on Harbor City Blvd for a mile, then turn left onto Nasa Blvd. Keep going even when it turns sharply right and bends left. Turn off left onto Imogene Dr, then right onto Old Nasa Blvd. Turn left onto Wickham Rd. Watch for us on your left right before the intersection with Sheridan Rd.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Indialantic’s rich history began in 1919 when Ernest Kouwenhoven, a Dutch settler, purchased the land that would eventually become known as Indialantic. Recognizing the potential of this beautiful coastal area, Kouwenhoven played a pivotal role in its development, starting with the construction of a wooden bridge that connected Indialantic to Melbourne. This initial bridge laid the foundation for future growth and accessibility between the two communities.
During the vibrant 1920s, Indialantic saw the rise of the Indialantic Hotel, strategically placed on what is now South Shannon Avenue. As the area flourished, the hotel underwent a name change to the Tradewinds Hotel, becoming a landmark in its own right at the site of today’s Tradewinds Terrace.
The development continued with the establishment of the Indialantic Casino in 1924, which was later renamed the Bahama Beach Club. This historic site is now home to the popular Nance Park, a favorite local destination for both residents and visitors.
The original wooden bridge saw a significant upgrade between 1941 and 1947 when it was replaced with a more robust drawbridge. This improvement was a part of the area’s post-war development efforts, although construction was delayed due to the wartime conditions.
In 1952, the community was officially incorporated as Indialantic-By-The-Sea, a name that, while formal, is rarely used in casual conversation. The area continued to grow and evolve, culminating in 1985 with the construction of a modern causeway. This new bridge featured an elevated span to facilitate unobstructed boat traffic on the Indian River, marking another milestone in the connection between Indialantic and Melbourne.
Today, Indialantic maintains its charm and continues to be a bridge between the past and present, making it an appealing place for residents and visitors to the Space Coast alike.
